Marmari

History

The name Marmari comes from the coloured marble which is quarried in this area and for which it was well - know from ancient times.

During the Turkish occupation, according to tradition, the harem of the Pasas of Karistos, spend their winter on Petaloi. During the Greek revolution in 1821 at Likorema, opposite Petaloi, the Philo - Hellenic Favieros established his army camp, after an unsuccessful siege of Karistos. He had planned to go to Attiki from Likorema. In the beginning the Greek expedionary forces were in an advantageous position because they had been supplied by the ships from the nearby islands, but when the Turkish fleet sailed from Chalkida, the Greek ships found itself trapped between two forces with little food and hardly any supplies.

However the Greek ships managed to force the enemies to withdraw after a cannonade and delivered food and supplies to the despondent Greeks. Later, under the leadership of Kriezotis the Greek forces arrived. After making an agreement with Favieros, the Greek forces landed and after a violent attack, breached the encirclement and occupied the Turkish trenches. Favieros was then able to take his troops to Attiki.

Today, Marmari is well - known, not only for its modern tourist facilities, but also for its carnival festival, which is held every Shrove Sunday.
