History

On the site of todays Limni stood ancient «Elimnion» where, according to mythology, the wedding of Zeus and Hera had taken place. Also, on the site of the covert «Galataki» was ancient Aiges where according to Stravon, there was the temple of Posidon.

The history of Limni starts from the Stone Age. Early Stone Age finds have been discovered at Rovies and Agia Anna and Late Stone Age Settlements at Limni and Kirinthos. Kirinthos seems to have been an important town from the Bronze Age, as it is mentioned by Homer in his list of towns which had taken part in the Trojan campaign. One can find remain of the fortifications of ancient Kirinthos, on a hill of the modern town.

During the Geometrical period, the inhabitants with the Chalkidians took part in the colonization of Chalkithiki. It's worth noting that Thurkydithes writes about this period. The historian of the Peloponesian wars informs us that during the first period of the war, there were strong earthquakes in Evia which caused widespread damage to Rovies (ancient name - Oroviai). In fact there was a tidal wave which inundated part of the town.

During the Middle Ages the Area seems to have been an important place. We have evidence from the Byzantine monastery of Saint Nicholas and also the medieval town which has been preserved at the monastery and also at Rovies. The area attracted the attention of pirates who moved about more or less freely in the region of Agean. It is significant that near Vlachia, there is the small community of Sarakiniko which, according to local tradition, created the sarakiniko pirates.

During the Greek revolution in 1821, Limni was one of the first places to «light the torch» for the struggle for liberation. In fact, Limni is the home town of Angelis Govginas, one of the leaders of the revolution movement in Evia. This hero kept his men's movale high and with a significant victory at Vrisakia, forced Omer Vrioni to abandon the island.

In this century the people of Limni have been engagged in fishing and in the last 10 years there has been a great development in tourism in the whole surrounding area, owing to its natural beauty. Here, the visitor will be able to sail along the coast of Mt. Kandili and watch the wild goats clinging on to its cliffs and slopes grazing among the pine trees and gazing into the depths of the sea.
