Karistos - Platanistos - Komito - Zacharia - Amygthalia - Kalianos Geographical position and features
Karistos the capital of Southern Evia, is built on one of the southernmost points of the island in the creek of the Gulf of Karistos under the shadow of the imposing mountain Ochi. It is a modern touristic resort, about 120 kilometres south - east of Chalkida, connected to Rafina on the eastern coast of Attiki by ferry - boat. The strong Agean winds which frequantly blow in from the pelagos give the area a unique quality of movement and changing colours. The area of Karistos with its wonderful beaches and picturesque of Ochi, combine the beauty of mountain and sea. It can therefore, be a starting point for a series of exciting tours to the seaside, to the mountain villages and to the villages of Kavo Doro (promentary of Kafirea). The village of Platanisto is also worth visiting as well as the coast of Platanisto, Potami, which combines the coolness of the plane - trees with the extensive beaches. The villages of Komito, Zacharia, Amigthalia and Kallianos are also of interest and of course the Ravine of Dimosari which lies near the last named village. While travelling in Karistos, the visitor must always bear in mind that the Evia landscape blends in the overlaps the landscape of Cyclades islands which are nearby. |
