Eretria
- Malacoda
Geographical
position and features
Eretria,
built along the western shores of Evia, is a small modern town which
has developed a considerable tourist industry. It is situated south
- east of Chalkida only 22 kilometres from the capital of the prefecture.
It is connected to the mainland by ferryboat. Its distinetive features
are the small islands and small rocky islands which are only a short
distance from the shore.
One
of the islands (the islands of Dreams) is joined to the town by a picturesque
bridge. Eretria had been called Nea Psara (New Psara) earlier because
it had been colonized by inhabitants from Psara in 1824 who had been
forced to abandon their island after a Turkish raid.
