The
red house |
The channel of Evripus, with its swing bridge
at the point where the southern and northern Gulf of Evia join and where
the extraordinary phenomena of the tide can be observed. At this point,
the waters change direction every six hours, northwards and then southwards.
The Castle of Karababa. On the Viotia coast of
the town, it occupies the top of the hill «Kanithos». The church of
the Prophet Elijah has been preserved in the interior of the castle
and from this hill the visitor has the opportunity to admire the wonderful
view of the town.
The mosque of Emir Zade, Characteristic monument
of the period. To the north - east there is a marble fountain with a
carved inscription.
The Town Hall, housed in the mansion of «Kotsika»,
it dominates the sea front of the town, with its fine architecture and
wonderful balanced dimensions.
The Red House belonging to the family «Malliou»
decorates the northern sea front. It belongs to the borough of Chalkida
and was built in 1884 by the French architect Flengis.

church of
Saint Paraskevi |
The church of Saint Paraskevi, a wooden roofed
basilika of the 5th to 8th century. The church is built on the ruins
of the ancient temple Artemi, Apollo and Leto. During Byzantium it was
dedicated to the Virgin Mary, «Perivleptos», but during the Turkish
occupation it was turned into a store house and carriage house. After
the liberation of Chalkida, the church was dedicated to Saint Paraskevi,
the patroness of the town.
The Court of Justice, on Veniselos Ave, whose
architect was Matthew Kamaras (1909) and who designed other buildings
in Chalkida during the same period.
The Historical Archives Building which is housed
in the mansion of Kriezotis.
The church of Saint Nicholas. Byzantine style
with fine murals.
The Roman aquaduct in the district of «Kamares»
(bridges) north - east of the town. There still stands part of the aquaduct
which supplied the town with water from Kampia.
The fountain «Arethousa» to the east of the church
of Saint Stephen. In the same area there are stone steps and many industrial
buildings.
Roman arena (wrestling ring) with mosaic floors
situated near the factory «Daring».
Mosair floors, on the hill «Giftika» (old workers
house), which are part of the town of ancient Chalkida.
