Geographical position and features

Palichoria

Amarinthos is a picturesque seaside resort situated in the Southern Gulf of Evia. It is south - east of Chalkida between Eretria and Aliveri and is only 30 kilometres from the Capital of the Prefecture. Its distinctive features comprise a long sea - front which extends along the centre of the town and the hill «Palichoria» which rises above the sea and on the top of which can be found small Byzantine churches. Amarinthos is built in a plain between Mt. Olympus and Mt. Kotileo. The existence of these two mountains of these two mountains frames the sea landscape of Amarinthos with mountain depth.

From Amarinthos the visitor can go on an interesting and varied tour inland. He can visit the picturesque village of Ano Vathia and climb up to the monastery of St. Nicholas on the stopes of the mountain where he can admire the panorama of the southern Gulf of Evia. He can also go up to the villages of Kalithea and Gymno eventually reaching Seta where he can enjoy alpine scenery in the heart of Evia. Here, among the fir - trees, one can find a theater which had been built, after a superhuman effort, by actor Nickos Papakonstantinos. The visitor will consider himself very fortunate if he is able to attend a performance of a Greek play in the shade of the fir - trees.

Amarinthos is also called «Vathia» (Lowland) probably because of the morphology of the land, or Kato Vathia (Low Vathia) to distinguish it from Ano Vathia (High Vathia).
